I paint all subjects – landscape, still life, portraits – but most often local scenes around the plains and in the Front Range mountains. My passion for the out-of-doors finds release in my painting, as the majesty of my surroundings reveals itself in the light that I aspire to capture. I most enjoy the feel of wet oil paint, so most of my work is alla prima, and I prefer to paint from life whenever I can. As a teenager, I painted with my fingers, and I copied Van Gogh paintings for the rich colors and heavy impasto and impulsive feel of the paintings. Now – after a decades-long break – I take a much more studied approach to my painting, but I still prefer painting wet-into-wet, with oils.
